Alfred Pennyworth was Bruce Wayne's legal guardian and butler at Wayne Manor.

Biography[]

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1[]

When Bruce went into the Batcave to remind himself of the promise he made, Alfred Pennyworth came to inform him that he had set off the alarm. Bruce apologised and Alfred asked him when he shaved, a question Bruce didn't have the answer to.

Alfred gave Bruce some physio after his first night back as Batman, making sarcastic remarks about Bruce's apparent death wish. He then received a call from James Gordon and handed Bruce his batsuit.

Alfred contacted Bruce when he discovered the signal from the Batmobile going live. He begged Bruce not to fight the Mutant Leader because he was much younger and physically fitter than Bruce but was ignored.

After the Mutant Leader was defeated, Carrie Kelley helped Bruce back to the Batmobile and Alfred tried to drive him remotely to a hospital. Bruce refused and had him drive them to the Batcave instead where Alfred helped Bruce treat his injuries and tried to convince him that it was a bad idea to continue to fight the Mutants and to take on another Robin after what had happened to Jason. Bruce once again ignored Alfred and took off with a new plan.

Once the Mutant Leader had been truly defeated, Alfred asked Bruce how he was feeling to which Bruce replied "like it was yesterday".

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2[]

Bruce sent Alfred to pick Carrie Kelley up from school which he did and drove her back to Wayne Manor.

After Batman's showdown with the Joker, Carrie took Bruce back to the Batcave where Alfred tended to his wounds. Carrie waited in Wayne Manor with Alfred whilst Bruce was hooked up to life support. The entire city blacked out from the EMP caused by the nuclear explosion including the life support machine and Robin's watch. Alfred checked Bruce was still alive before he woke up and suited up as Batman.

Alfred helped Bruce put on his armored Batsuit and then set the Manor to self destruct whilst Batman went to fight Superman. Alfred waited outside and watched the Manor explode. As he watched, Alfred had a stroke, collapsed and died.
