Edward "Eddie" Thawne was a police detective of the Central City Police Department. After his ressurectiom, he became a speedster known as Cobalt Blue. He was originally the fiancé of Iris West, Barry Allen's colleague, Joe West's partner and Eobard Thawne's ancestor. Eddie was transferred from Keystone City to Central City and eventually began dating Iris while working with Joe as police detectives. Eddie and Barry do end up good friends who assisted each other in various investigations.

Although he's disillusioned, Eddie realizes the future is not set so he sacrificed himself to erase Eobard from existence and his body is sucked into a wormhole. Wanting a new a avatar, the Negative Speed Force resurrected Eddie as Mercury Labs' scientist Malcolm Gilmore in the year 2049, being manipulated into believing he lost a chance with Iris and a family, turning himself into the speedster Cobalt Blue using the Cobalt-97 crystal. He later recruits Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Savitar and Godspeed to help him fight Team Flash. However, his allies are defeated and Eddie overcomes the Negative Speed Force's influence and agrees to co-exist with Barry.

- Negative Speed Force Enhancements: Thawne is connected to the Negative Speed Force, a primordial energy entity, which gives him all of his powers.
- Superhuman Speed: He is capable of running and reacting at the speed of light itself.
- Accelerated Perception: He is capable of seeing the world in slow motion as well.
- Electrokinesis: He has learnt to use his speed to create and throw lightning.
- Superhuman Metabolism: His hyper metabolism is also superhumanly fast, enabling him an increased immune system and increased healing. He recovered from fatal injuries and crippled back bone in a day or two, with medical attention.
- Superhuman Strength: He has a certain degree of superhuman strength, being capable of lifting many people, despite his almost-scrawny build.
- Time Travel: By running extremely fast, he is capable of traveling through time.
- Interdimensional Travel: By running at an even more advanced superhuman rate, he is able to break open portals through various dimensions.
- Phasing: By vibrating his bodily molecules to be similar to air molecules and running extremely fast, he can phase through physical objects.
