The Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) is the police department in Gotham City.
The GCPD occasionally seeks assistance from members of the Bat-Family, a vigilante team founded by Batman to apprehend criminals.
Following the retirement of Commissioner James Gordon, the GCPD became antagonistic towards the Bat-Family and their allies due to the new Commissioner, Ellen Yindel, who held a negative view of vigilantes, completely disregarding the Bat-Family's heroic acts.
After Batman recruited the Sons of the Batman in his war against crime, a reluctant Yindel ordered the GCPD to leave the Bat-Family alone.
Yindel also acknowledged that the GCPD were unable to subdue the Bat-Family and the consequences of attempting to do so would end quite badly for the department, especially once the vigilante team's numbers had grown.

The Gotham City Police Department's goal is to protect Gotham City from dangerous threats.
Although the Gotham City Police Department enforces the law, they completely understands the limitations they face in combating certain formidable threats alone, prompting them to seek assistance from members of the Bat-Family, a vigilante team founded by Batman. The GCPD accepts and acknowledges Bat-Family's vigilantism as long as they do not cross any moral lines in the process.
