Green Lantern Movie Prequel is a five-issue limited series published by DC Comics and Warner Bros. Productions from July to August of 2011. As it's title implies, the series serves as a prequel to the 2011 feature film, Green Lantern. It was written by Geoff Johns, Michael Goldenberg, Marc Guggenheim, Peter Tomasi, Michael Green, and Greg Berlanti.
Plot[]
The comic series showcases events that take place before or during the movie. Each of the five issues focus on a different character's perspective.
Green Lantern Movie Prequel: Sinestro[]
The Green Lantern Corps gathered on Oa to mourn the death of Abin Sur. Sinestro remembered events from thirteen years ago, when he first became a Green Lantern. He once tried to calm down a riot between Korugarans and government agents. Suddenly, a green power ring chose him and teleported him to Oa, where he first met Abin Sur. Sinestro, who never believed the Green Lanterns were real, demanded to return to Korugar so that he can eradicate his enemies. Sur calmed him down and explained that the Green Lanterns don't believe in vengeance but in justice. Tomar-Re snapped Sinestro out of his memories and reassured him that the entire Corps is there for him. He also asked what should be their course of action now. Looking back at his comrades, Sinestro reminded them of what the Corps stands for: to seek justice for those who need it.
Green Lantern Movie Prequel: Tomar-Re[]
Tomar-Re asks Abin Sur about his recent mission on Earth, but Salakk interrupted their conversation, summoning Tomar for a meeting. Salakk briefed him about Purd'n, a terrorist dubbed Darkfire wreaking havoc on X'hal. Upon arrival, Tomar found X'hal completely ravaged. He saved some survivors from the wreckage, who told him to find Darkfire at the shipyards. Seeing the devastation enraged Tomar-Re, whose suit briefly adopted a tint of red. Tomar tracked the ship to the Lost Sector, and, even though no Green Lantern is allowed to enter, his status as a member of the Honor Guard authorized him to go forth.
Tomar-Re finally intercepted the ship and fights Darkfire. Suddenly, a nearby presence made Tomar feel fear for the first time, and his force weakened. They took the battle to a deserted planet as the ship crashed on the surface. However, Tomar overcame the fear and captured Darkfire. Three Intraxians walked out of the wrecked ship, but Tomar-Re had barely enough power left to escape the lost sector with Purd'n. Darkfire taunted Tomar to kill him since marooning him with the Intraxians would put them in further danger. Tomar-Re ultimately decided to spare him and took Darkfire to Oa, feeling defeated because he fell into his play. As they fly away, Tomar-Re can't help but fear that his decision will doom the Intraxians, as well as the universe.
Green Lantern Movie Prequel: Kilowog[]
Kilowog trained new rookies who were joining the Corps. While they fly through Oa's sky, Green Lantern Atey rushed past them to inform the Guardians of an urgent matter. Atey told the Guardians that she's been experiencing visions about impending darkness that will threaten the Corps and the entire universe. Despite her insistence, the Guardians dismissed her claims, saying the Corps and the universe are always in jeopardy. After she left, they ordered Kilowog to prepare his class to enter their star sectors as soon as possible. After an exhausting training session, the rookies barely had time to wind up when the Spider Guild attacked Oa. Kilowog ordered them to destroy the ships, but they stood back to save him from the spiders overrunning him. Disappointed by how they disobeyed orders, Kilowog revealed the Spider Guild invasion was just a simulation and ended the training session. Kilowog lectured them on how they are supposed to protect the world, not individuals. Suddenly, Tomar-Re summoned him, and he leaves the rookies to repeat the exercise until they do it right.
At the meeting point, Tomar-Re informed Kilowog that his mentor, Abin Sur, had died. Kilowog, who saw Abin as a father figure, was enraged and demanded to know how this happened, but they still didn't have the full details. Instead, Tomar told him that his successor is coming to Oa, and the Guardians want Kilowog to train him immediately due to his place of origin: Earth, a planet that never produced a Green Lantern before.
Green Lantern Movie Prequel: Abin Sur[]
Twenty years ago, Abin Sur of Sector 2814 pursued a smuggler ship through an asteroid field, where the vessel ultimately crashed, damaging and scattering its cargo. Abin takes the contrabandist Obba but, unbeknownst to him, a device drifted away and enters Earth's orbit. Later, Sinestro contacted Abin and notified him of the smuggler shipment that crashed on Earth. Dubbing it a primitive planet, Sinestro ordered him to retrieve it and avoid detection so that there's no evidence of alien life forms. In New Mexico, a U.S. military squad camped in the desert at night. Amanda Waller had the first watch, and she witnessed the alien device crashing in the distance. She followed the trail to the graveyard of military vehicles. Amanda arrived at the crater, but there was no evidence of what caused it. Suddenly, the metal around her started to glow and merge, transforming into a machine.
Abin Sur arrived in time to find the alien machine firing at Waller. He recognized the threat as a Mechivore, a techno-organic virus that feeds on metal. Abin watched how the human stands her ground against all odds and, to his surprise, destroyed the machine by luring it near explosives. The explosion deactivated the Mechivore, but also knocked Waller unconscious. Awed by her courage, Abin Sur tended to her wounds and helped her recover before she woke up again.
Abin Sur then flied off, taking the whole graveyard in a bubble to dispose of any evidence of the Mechivore's existence, and threw it at the sun. Abin was still unimpressed by the human's primitive, violent nature, but he realized that Earth has the potential to house promising individuals. Back on Earth, the Department of Extranormal Operations offered Amanda Waller a "desk job" at their agency.
Green Lantern Movie Prequel: Hal Jordan[]
After Abin Sur's death and the election of his successor, Sinestro and Tomar-Re scanned Hal Jordan's memories and discussed his quality as a ring-bearer. True to his opinion about humans being primitive and violent, Sinestro claimed Jordan was reckless, insubordinate, unable to work in a team, and a coward. Still, Tomar-Re defended Hal Jordan after seeing him protect a woman from his superior officer in the military. Still unconvinced by this "heroic act," Sinestro ordered the ring to tell him if there are other candidates on Earth to join the Green Lantern Corps, and the scan reveals another subject: a football player named Guy Gardner. Sinestro replayed the memory of the death of Hal Jordan's father. Unwilling to accept the new candidate, Sinestro wrongly accused Hal of being full of fear, making him useless to deal with Parallax. Sinestro left, leaving Tomar-Re to ponder on Hal Jordan's potential.
