"Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son."

Jor-El was the biological father of Superman. He was a leading member of the Science Council before Krypton's destruction. He foresaw the planet's destruction and, failing to convince the rest of the Council, he decided to send his son, Kal-El, to Earth to save him, and give the world a light to lead the way for them to become a great people. He continues to guide his son through the Fortress of Solitude.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Kryptonian Physiology: As a Kryptonian, Jor-El's alien body adapted to Earth's atmosphere and gravity and absorbed the yellow radiation emitted by the sun. This process of adaption would have gained Jor-El superhuman powers. However, this never happened as he wasn't ever exposed to a sun different to the the Kryptonians' natural red one.

  • Genius-Level Intellect: Being a member of the Kryptonian Science Council, Jor-El was extremely intelligent and wise, so much so that he figured out a way to send his son to Earth. If his fellow council members ignored his observations about Krypton's destruction, which they did.
  • Master Scientist: Jor-El was one of Krypton's foremost scientists. He accurately predicted that the planet was going to be destroyed by it's red sun.

  • The idea of Superman's S-Shield originating from Krypton as the House of El's family crest came from Marlon Brando himself.
  • When Jor-El physically appeared in seasons 9 and 10 of Smallville, he was dressed in an outfit similar to Donner's Jor-El.
  • Paul Newman and Charlton Heston were considered for the role of Jor-El.
  • Marlon Brando's Jor-El was originally going to make a cameo in The Flash, however this was scrapped.
