Mackie was a bank robber who was stopped by Batman.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1[]
Mackie was hired by Harvey Dent to rob a bank. As they fled the bank they were pursued by the police and by Batman. Batman then used force to incapacitate the robbers, leaping through the derelict floor and dragging Mackie into the darkness.
