The Mutants were a street gang led by the Mutant Leader. After the Mutant Leader's defeat, they were either arrested or splintered off into smaller groups.
History[]
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1[]
The Mutants terrorized Gotham City, attacking people in the streets and other such crimes. They publicly threatened to kill Commissioner Gordon for interfering with their crime spree.
They got increasingly more violent and attacked and kidnapped children. Batman intervened to stop the rising crime levels.
The Mutants gathered, rallied by their leader, until Batman once again showed up and incapacitated 83 Mutants including their leader. They were arrested.
The free Mutants vowed to make Gordon pay and to raze Gotham whilst their leader was held in captivity. Batman and Robin infiltrated the gang and had them all gather by a pipe where they witnessed Batman fight and defeat the Mutant Leader. Demoralised by the loss, many of the Mutants allowed themselves to be arrested whilst other went off and formed new groups including the Sons of Batman.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2[]
The Mutants that had been arrested were able to escape during the blackout caused by the nuclear explosion. They took to the streets and immediately began fighting the public. Batman, Robin and the Sons of the Batman interrupted the fighting and subdued both sides. Batman rallied the Mutants to his cause in protecting the city from mayhem.
